What goes into the number
Frost dates come from NOAA's 1991-2020 climate normals, the last-spring-freeze and first-fall-freeze probability elements at 32°F, joined to each ZIP code's nearest reporting station. Hardiness zones come from the USDA Plant Hardiness Zone Map. Neither dataset is this exact address's own weather station in most cases, the methodology guide documents the join and its limits in full.
